I'm not a specialist, but I think that 750mA is too small. The 2nd
generation Newton adapters were rated 9W, 7.5V, 1.2A. It might explains why
the Newton stays off. However, you need to be warned that using non-Newton
adapters can be harmful to your Newton. I hope that is not the case. But you
should try to get a genuine adapter, or one that is closer to the Newton's
specs.

firebottle n.obs.: A large, primitive, power-hungry active electrical
device, similar in function to a FET but constructed out of glass, metal,
and vacuum. Characterized by high cost, low density, low reliability,
high-temperature operation, and high power dissipation. Sometimes mistakenly
called a `tube' in the U.S. or a `valve' in England; another hackish term is
glassfet.
