You don't turn a Newton off, you just let it sleeps. The power will last
until you're back. Or just take it along for notes, as book reader and
maybe some games.

No. Just pull a backup once a month.

The only thing that can happen after quite a while and much use and using
large storage devices is that the storage gets fractured and the machine
reacts slower. See the FAQ and the Wiki (see link at the bottom of every
NTLK post), somewhere there should be a how-to for that event.

The Wiki especially is a very good place to find a lot of info and how-tos.
It is strongly encouraged to add your own how-tos to the Wiki. Try out
something new, write down every step, and publish it at the Wiki, that's
going to be very valuable help for the next newbie. E.g. check my Moron's
Guide to Simple Mail.
The Wiki is a very good way for people who are new to the Newton to
discover help and leave some new documentation for other users, you know,
giving something back to the community.

>3.Can i zap the pram on a newton

No.

>4.Can i restart the newton with out pressing the reset swithch?

Yes. There are third-party applications that allow this, like Sleep Aid
(part of ICS NewtCase) and Vitamin A (by Standalone Software). There are
commercially marketed apps, you might find them at their creators websites
or (with patience) on Ebay. NewtCase is much recommended!

Are there any shareware or freeware apps that do this also - possibly by
Nick or SBM or somebody like that? (Paging Eckhart K. - might be nice to
include something like that in Small Extras...)

>5.Should i restart the newton every now and then like you should do
>on a regualr computer?

Why? If you don't use it, it will simply go to sleep by itself to save
power, so no prob.

>6.how do most people fix common problems with the newton? Like on a
>mac the first thing a person will tell you to to is zap the pram and
>rebuild the desktop.

Restart.

Besides this, the FAQ and the Wiki give some help, as does
http://www.pda-soft.de . If you hape a spare 2 MB card you don't need for
daily use, you might want to put some stuff on there to help you if the
index gets corrupted, the display breaks and you want ot pull a backup,
etc. Search NTLK for "First Aid Kit" for some suggestions, also for "Card
Lending".

Another valuable suggestion would be to get the MP 2100-manual (available
for free at UNNA). It's a PDF (Newton e-book available, too), and it's very
good. I think this has previously been suggested, but there's no harm in
repeating the wisdom of our elders. ;=}

Finest regards,

DJV.
